Ultima Lucha Dos Part II

– We were in week two of Ultima Lucha Dos‘ three-week spectacle, as the opening video showed us that here we’d see Night Claw’s impending debut and a Death match between Mil Muertes and King Cuerno, which was demanded by Catrina after Cuerno cheated his way to pin Muertes upon their last bout.

Strange Bedfellows

– After Cage’s unsuccessful attempt to uncrown Lucha Underground Champion Matanza Cueto via a “cash-in” of the Gift Of The Gods Championship, it was apparently decided that the GOTG needed to come back into play again for an episode’s purpose. Okay, that’s fine, but giving away all seven in one hour could be exhausting. That’s what we were in for, as evidenced in the opening video. Also highlighted were Mascarita Sagrada’s slump since under the managerial wing of Famous B/Brenda as well as the El Dragon Azteca Jr.-Black Lotus storyline, as Dario Cueto played both of them like a fiddle.

Machine Head

– This episode’s focus would revolve (like previous) around the Trios Championship rematch and Gift Of The Gods Champion Cage as he’d cash in to get a title shot against Lucha Underground Champion Matanza. Sure, Cage likely doesn’t stand a chance, but the potential brewed for a good battle.

A Not-So-Nice Gift Of The Gods

– It’s that part of the Lucha Underground season where we get development in different areas. This particular episode focused on the Gift Of The Gods concept – somewhat of a WWE ripoff, but done more logically. Seven people fight for separate medallions that all magnetically connect into a belt to give it its “power,” a shot at the Lucha Underground Championship whenever the winner chooses so. The opening video highlighted the medallion holders – Sexy Star, Aerostar, The Mack, Joey Ryan, Texano, Sinestro De La Muerte and Cage, though he had his medallion stolen by Chavo Guerrero. Also brought up were the early seeds of a long-term feud between LUG Champion Matanza Cueto and Pentagon Jr., as we saw highlights of when the man of “cero miedo” was manhandled by the beast.

The Trios Heats Up

– Season two of LUG has now become synonymous with Dario Cueto, a Trios Tournament and now LUG Champion Matanza as this unstoppable force. Sure, everything sans Matanza is hints of season one greatness, but there are many new characters on the scene, namely from the AAA promotion. Things feel fresh even if the formula per se, isn’t. That said, the opening video concentrated on the seven medallions of the ancient Aztec tribes being released again for the LUG Gift Of The Gods Championship, the story so far on the Cage-Johnny Mundo feud and the latest on Matanza and the Trios Tournament.
